Light Up Boma Ng’ombe
Purpose: To provide solar lanterns to 10 houses in a Maasai Village (2-3 per house/hut) with no electricity.
Cost: $450 (Lanterns are $15 each) Duration: one month; start anytime. Description: West of Moshi and Mount Kilimajaro in Northern Tanzania, the land is very arid and receives little annual rainfall. The government and local power company.
Tanesco, has not built infrastructure to provide electricity to homes in this area. In particular, the village of Boma Ng’ombe (Swahili for “cow village”) is quite poor, and electricity and services </are less affordable for locals living in this area. Boma Ng’ombe lies just south of the equator and there is 12 hours of night (and day) year-round. Therefore, the nights are quite long without electricity.
Candles and kerosene lanterns are commonly used for lighting houses. If the family is able to afford installing electricity to their homes, it is first used to put lights on the outside of the house to ward off animals and intruders. Solar lighting offers a practical solution to the lack of electricity in Boma Ng’ombe and other nearby villages. For a family living in a traditional hut, typically 2-3 solar lights are sufficient to light a house. Durable solar lanterns producing a lot of light that are easy to recharge and use are preferred.
Luci lanterns are durable, reliable, affordable, practical and designed for use in a variety of living conditions. They are manufactured by Mpowerd, and are made of durable plastic, inflated for use for 6 hours and recharge after 8 hours in the sun.
