Supporting Maasai Communities Experiencing Extreme Poverty

Lalafofofo-Amka Sasa works on the ground in rural Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania to address the immediate and long-term challenge of extreme poverty within Maasailand communities. Since 2015, through grassroots programs, we provide women and children with access to clean water, school meals, essential health education and much more.

Asante sana. Many thanks.

Our Approach

Our impact is delivered through three pillars to ensure both immediate relief and long-term stability.

Lalafofofo-Amka Sasa’s programs operate year-round in collaboration with our rural partner communities. All programming and projects are consistent with the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals for 2030. Our vision is to see youth in rural Kilimanjaro rise out of extreme poverty*, and to grow and thrive in their communities.

The Problem

The Maasai experience additional hardships and lack of access to resources in Tanzania due to their ethnicity. Extreme poverty contributes to several interconnected socio-economic problems including: food insecurity, child marriage, unemployment, lack of electricity, inadequate sanitation and stunting. Since 2015, we continue to work with three Maasai communities to individually address these issues.

*As of 2026, the World Bank defines extreme poverty as living on less than $3.00 per person per day. This “International Poverty Line” represents the threshold of severe deprivation for basic needs, including food, water, shelter, and healthcare, and is used to track global progress.
