Girls Scholarship Program
Est. July 2016
Theory Of Change
Empower Maasai girls through education and sisterhood to help them rise out of poverty and become role models and leaders so that they can uproot child marriage traditions and instill new ideas of gender equality for themselves and other girls in their community.
Goals
(1) Reduce the prevalence rate of child marriage in girls 8-14 years in Mlima Shabaha and Tindigani villages.
(2) Provide at-risk child brides with a group home and scholarship program to fund their individual learning plans.
(3) Equip scholars with knowledge and skills to obtain gainful employment and financial security.
Impact
The girls scholarship program has directly prevented 14 child marriages in 2 Maasai communities. All girls have passed their national exams and half are in the top 10% of their class.
This program has empowered educators and mothers to identify and act at the local level to prevent child marriages and increase access to education for Maasai girls. This is only the beginning for our girls…
Funding
This program is fully funded by individual donors and sponsors. Asanteni sana (many thanks) to our wonderful sponsors and donors; we are so grateful to have you all as members of the LFAS family!

Looking Forward
In order to end more child marriages and expand our programming to additional Maasai girls in Mlima Shabaha and Tindigani, we will be initiating a new seasonal scholarship program for gifted students to continue their education into government secondary schools.
