2021 Summer Interns
Chris Bumpus

Chris is a Senior at University of Colorado, Boulder studying Economics and History with a heavy course emphasis in African History. Chris plans to spend six-eight weeks in Germany after graduation enrolled in a language school to reach the maximum competency in German that he can. Outside of class, Chris might be at his second job with Pocket Outdoor Media, where he is a fulfillment assistant, or making gradual progress learning to play guitar. Chris is looking forward to his role in Lalafofofo as a Grant Writer and plans to provide a connection between Lalafofofo and Rotary International in service of ongoing and future projects.
Aleksandra Gicala

Aleksandra Gicala is a recent graduate of Knox College, where she majored in International Relations and International Studies. During her time at the college, she interned at the Knox County Courthouse, where she learned about the importance of legal proceedings and community involvement. While studying abroad in Spain, Aleksandra had the opportunity to practice her third language, Spanish, and to learn in-depth about the Catalan culture. In her free time, Aleksandra loves to expand her knowledge about the world and volunteer in her community. At Lalafofofo, Aleksandra will be in-charge of the Database set-up and review.
Grace mcintosh

Grace is a junior at the University of Maine at Farmington studying psychology. After she graduates, Grace plans to pursue a PhD in clinical sexology– driven by the passion for accessible and accurate sex education for youth. When Grace is not in class, she can be often found in the Mantor Library where she works as a research assistant for the education department. Grace will be working with the Girls Scholarship Program to research reproductive health education in Tanzania to help create a program for girls in the future.
Claire Clapp

A recent graduate from the University of Puget Sound, Claire studied International Political Economy and Spanish with an emphasis in global development and health policy. In her spare time she practices conversational Arabic and cares for her collection of plants. Upon graduating, Claire intends to continue nonprofit work or pursue nursing certification in order to best use her language skills to provide quality care to underserved populations. At Lalafofofo Claire will be working as a grant writer with the Girls Scholarship Program, focusing on the Vocational Training Program. She is enthusiastic about working with other dedicated individuals to accomplish the shared goals of female empowerment and poverty reduction.
Lucy Grant

A senior at Smith College, Lucy is a biological sciences major and a marine science & policy minor. Within her studies, she focuses on coastal ecosystems and ecology, studying the intersections between climate change and environmental injustice. After graduation, Lucy plans on pursuing an M.S. in environmental science, focusing in geospatial analysis, and hopes to eventually get a phD in a related field. At Lalafofofo, Lucy is the project data coordinator, researching effective ways to improve public health in Tanzanian communities. Outside of school and work, you can find her listening to an audiobook in a local park or cooking Italian food with her best friend.
Alyssa Schams

Alyssa is a Junior at Smith College, where she is double majoring in History and Government. At school, she is the Vice-President of the Pre-Law Society, helps run the Fusayfsa’ Middle East journal, and plays goalie for her lacrosse team. Upon graduation, Alyssa hopes to attend law school. In her spare time, Alyssa loves to read and is working on learning Russian. At Lalafofofo this spring, she will be researching female genital mutilation (FGM) and planning the 2021 summer leadership camp.
Sayler Tyson

Sayler Tyson is a senior studying Media & Film at Suffolk University in Boston. Upon graduating, she hopes to pursue a career in International Journalism with a focus on reporting on social issues such as women's rights and economic development. In her free time, she is often reading a good book, watching a foreign film, or browsing local vintage stores for new finds. She has always been passionate about international aid on a global scale and looks forward to contributing to Lalafofofo’s mission. Sayler will be working with the Girls Scholarship Program as the Child Marriage Research & Monitoring Intern.
Emma is a sophomore at Worcester Polytechnic Institute studying Bioinformatics & Computational Biology and Computer Science. On campus, she’s part of the Alliance, Bioinformatics & Computational Biology Club, choir, and the student EMS squad. In her spare time, she likes to crochet and cook. At Lalafofofo, she will be updating the Lalafofofo website and building the website for Tanzanian sister organization Amka Sasa.
Samantha Wood

Samantha is a senior at the University of Maine at Farmington and has a double major in political science and international and global studies with a minor in women’s and gender studies. In the fall semester of 2019 she studied abroad in Geneva, Switzerland for international studies and multilateral diplomacy. Samantha is looking to continue her studies after graduation into law school for international human rights law. She is excited to work with Lalafofofo and to help increase awareness for the work they do through their social media platforms and website.
